On the strength of sales from the Call of Duty, Skylanders, Diablo and World of Warcraft franchises, Activision Blizzard also reported better net revenues than the company expected for the calendar year of 2012.
As previously revealed, Call of Duty: Black Ops II generated $1 billion within 15 days after launch. The Skylanders franchise has also generated over $1 billion in worldwide sales. Diablo III sold over 12 million copies since it launched last May and World of Warcraft still has 9.6 million subscribers following the launch of the Mists of Pandaria expansion last fall. Note that the 9.6 million figure is actually a drop from the last report of subscriber numbers.
According to CEO Bobby Kotick, “As we look to 2013, we will continue to invest in our established franchises, as well as several new properties.”
For 2013, Activision Blizzard will be shipping an expansion for StarCraft II called Heart of the Swarm on March 12. A new Skylanders called Swap Force is also on the way. Bungie’s Destiny is also in development, though there’s no indication of when this new franchise might actually launch.
