PC graphics will continue to surpass those of consoles this generation, Tony Tamasi, senior VP of content and technology, told PC Power Play. He said that Nvidia spends $10 billion a year on graphics research, a sum that console companies can't keep up with.
Tamasi said that PCs will outperform consoles in the graphics department because companies like Nvidia and AMD invest a higher power budget, or potential, in the architecture of PCs. So, while console graphics will remain static over time, PCs will constantly evolve.
"Taken to the theoretical limits, the best any console could ever do would be to ship a console that is equal to the best PC at that time," Tamasi said. "But then a year later it’s going to be slower, and it still wouldn’t be possible due to the power limits."
As for any competition between console and PC manufacturers, Tamasi is optimistic. "It’s great for gamers, as games can be better on all platforms."
